What are Anticoagulants?


Anticoagulants are medications that prevent blood clotting. These agents are administered in situations where the patient is at a higher risk of clot formation and embolization, such as in cases of arrhythmias (e.g., atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter), prosthetic heart valves, reduced mobility due to critical conditions or impending surgery, and ischemic heart disease to prevent cardiovascular events like myocardial infarction or stroke.


Anticoagulants Classification


There are three main types of anticoagulants:

  • 1. Heparins
    • Unfractionated heparin (subcutaneous or intravenous routes of administration)
    • Low-molecular-weight heparin: Enoxaparin (subcutaneous or intravenous routes of administration)
    • Pentasaccharide: Fondaparinux (subcutaneous route of administration)
  • 2. Non-vitamin K antagonist direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs)
    • Direct thrombin (factor IIa) inhibitor: Dabigatran
    • Factor Xa inhibitors: Rivaroxaban, Apixaban, Edoxaban
  • 3. Vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants
    • Vitamin K antagonist: Warfarin
